It depends on the type. Wi-Fi cameras need a connection for alerts and remote viewing. Wired systems with a local DVR or NVR record without internet, though you lose remote access when it is down. Some cameras add cellular backup. If your Wi-Fi is weak where a camera goes, a wired or PoE option is more dependable.
