Evidence says yes. In a University of North Carolina at Charlotte study of 422 incarcerated burglars, about 83% tried to determine whether an alarm was present and roughly 60% would choose a different target if one was. Around 40% said visible cameras would push them to pick another home. Visibility is much of the deterrent.
