Security Help Guide is a free service that connects homeowners with local security companies and installers. We are not a security company, alarm dealer, or monitoring provider, and we do not sell, install, or monitor security systems.

The short answer

An outdoor camera should be weather-rated, have solid night vision, and cover an entrance or approach without blind spots. Wired or PoE cameras give continuous recording; battery models are easier to place. Mount around nine feet up, angled down, out of easy reach, and check that alerts reach your phone reliably.
